形態特徵

• Evergreen trees, 9–20 m high, 0.9–1.2 m across; bark gray; branchlets golden-brown-hairy.
• Leaves thickly coriaceous, obovate to oblong, 7–10 cm long, 2.2–3.5 cm broad, acute or obtusely rounded at apex, cuneate at base, margins nearly entire or slightly wavy, crenulate and somewhat recurved, lateral veins 6–10 pairs, concave above, elevated and tomentose beneath; petioles 0.6–1.3 cm long, densely tomentose.
• Staminate catkins about 8 cm long; staminate flowers 3.5 mm long, 3.5 mm across; perianth 5–6-lobed, puberulent outside; stamens 5–6, filaments 2.7 mm long, anthers 0.8 mm long, puberulent. Pistillate flowers 1.8 mm long, 1.5 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed; styles 3, slightly connate at base, hairy, stigmas glabrous.
• Cupules cup-like, 0.9 cm long, 1.5 cm across, scales in 6–7 concentric rings, dark-brown, tomentose outside;nuts ellipsoid to globose, 1.5 cm long, 1.3–1.4 cm across, apiculate at apex, rounded at base.

物候

Staminate flowers blooming from January to March; fruits maturing from October to December.

分布

• 台灣 : in forests from Kaiyenshan (Taitung Coastal Range, 7 km north of Chengkun City, 1053 m altitude), Chinshuiying (850–1,400 m) and Shouka (300–400 m) to Nanjenshan on the Hengchun Peninsula.
• 世界 : Distributed in S China, Hainan Island and Hong Kong.
